10/11/11

Well, here is what we did today.....

Many conversations about what was actually going on. in relation to the question about character development that i can't remember we hotseated according to our new (ish) people:
Maria: morgan, 22, fiancee is fave person-taken, couldnt live without him, got the text on her wedding day, fave food is ice cream.
David: jimmy, 25, daughter is 3, not much contact with her, lives with her mum in plymouth, wouldnt let anyone get near her let alone touch her, would hunt them down and kill them when he knew who it was.
Me: Elizabeth (lizzie), 18, "playing for her mum", couldnt cope if her mum was gone, got text at 4:30 in afternoon, was watching tv, possibly got the text first.

We also improvised the begginning we will start with all of us lying dead on the floor, then i turn my head  'What's happened?!' then it will be a blackout and will be sitting around a table with money as a ransom for our people talk for a bit, then cut to 'marias' scene where david is the best man and i am her mum its her wedding day and david and i are trying to hide the fact that we don't know where 'eric' is.
Feedback: change to david as best man rather than dad so we did that, i should have my money with me rather than hiding it to make everyone more the same.

Other notes: happen in a run down warehouse in east london, funny in specific scene serious around the table, stimulus: fear after watching the skateboarders at the south bank, could we have got there throught facebook? text?, it's a massive thing if a life is at steak so we have to fully show that in our scenes.

More tomorrow after our lunch time rehearsal :)

  1. Emily - you have written some good points here - remember to always try to be as specific as possible with your writing - the more critical and specific you can be now, the easier it will be when you are collating everything for your final SWED.
I think the crucial thing with your new idea, is finding the ultimate "thing" that makes each character tick, so the audience see a really 3 dimensional character.

Devising can be a rough ride and you will come to days when you do hit that brick wall. HOWEVER, when these situations present themselves, always try to push through. I do think it is a good idea that you have decided to use another idea from the stimulus, but I think from now on, go with this idea and don't veer off your main path of the story.
As you explored on Thursday, the card game idea might not be so plausible for every character, so your next decision is to find a reason/activity that brings these 3 characters together.
Keep the story simple....that is the key to good story telling. Maybe take a day brainstorming ideas with your group. When a brick wall presents itself, go back to the main stimulus to generate a fresh idea. Something will always pop out and could be the key to the next idea. Don't force a climax to happen, it will naturally evolve through your devising process.

Also, make sure when you write each part of your blog, say which Q you think it relates to. This will make it so much easier and clearer when it comes to writing your final SWED and collating all your writing.

    Keep up the blogging!

  2. Emily - where is your blog write up from last week's character workshop (Thursday 1st Dec)???? You did some great exploration in the lesson - write it up before you forget!! Consider all the greater detail you discovered and explored with your character - this is all essential to building a more 3 dimensional character and will help you to develop your role.
